Telecare

Improving the management of chronic disease is a key priority for national health policy. One major objective is to ensure that patients with chronic diseases are treated in a community setting or supported at home whenever possible. Telecare has an important role to play within chronic disease management (CDM), to improve patient survival and quality of life by assisting the earlier identification of deterioration in a patient’s condition, and enabling more appropriate and timely interventions. Technological advances in diagnostics and IT are offering innovative solutions to the challenge of managing chronic disease problems of our growing ageing population. The Telecare Knowledge Network focuses specifically on the integration and application of technology for CDM and in support of independent living.

The role of the Telecare KN is to:

• Help create a more sophisticated product and service offering to meet developing telecare needs.
• Educate the purchasers and suppliers thus creating conditions for market growth.
• Help to provide a forum in which a sophisticated supply chain can evolve.
• Stimulate collaborations between academic, user and industrial organisations which will accelerate the commercialisation of innovative telecare technologies to the scale envisaged in recent Department of Health policy documents.
