Mission

The “Air Traffic Management Knowledge Network” (ATM KN) seeks to establish opportunities for UK Air Traffic Management companies, which are predominantly based in the South East, to make greater contacts and foster partnerships with Universities and Research Bodies.

Background

The UK ATM industry has an estimated turnover of around £750 million and comprises over 200 companies and organisations; including an increasing number of universities and research bodies. Located predominantly in the South East of England the UK ATM Industry comprises more than 50 of the most innovative and successful ATM Small and Medium sized enterprises (SMEs) in Europe together with a concentrated representation of major global ‘primes’. Recognising this extraordinary pool of talent and its potential for future wealth creation SEEDA, the South East England Development Agency, supports the running of the ATM KN. The ATM KN is an initiative of the Farnborough Aerospace Consortium (FAC) and is managed on their behalf by Helios. For more information please contact the ATM KN project manager.

Objectives

The ATM KN held a series of events between 2006 and 2008 which brought the UK industry together and identified plenty of enthusiasm to collaborate on R&D problems in the UK and with European partners. The ATM Knowledge Network is set to continue through 2009 with a focus on engaging with all stakeholder groups, identifying activities for them and supporting their access through collaborative knowledge transfer. This includes bringing together representatives from both industry and academia in various informal forums to:

  • share information on the global market;
  • create an ‘active’ and collaborative community; and
  • provide opportunities for businesses and universities to showcase their products and services;

Alongside these activities the ATM KN will continue identify and nurture a longer term set of knowledge transfer activities which the membership will be able to take advantage of through collaborative bids and R&D activities.

Success through Collaboration

A forum examining opportunities for UK ATM companies to collaborate on joint research and development projects was recently held at BAE Systems' park centre in Farnborough. The event was well attended, with over 50 representatives from private industry, academia and government.

The forum focused on some of the key topics and technologies that will form the basis of the UK's ATM technology roadmap - an iniative of the Aerospace and Defence Knowledge Transfer Network, and a fully integrated part of the National Aerospace Technology Strategy. This event showcased knowledge areas in which the UK is established at the forefront of collaborative research and development (within both industry and academia).

SESAR and Future ATM development projects

An event focused on SESAR and Future ATM Development Projects was held successfully held at the RAF Club, Piccadilly, London, on Friday 12th December. Contributions came from:

  • The "Single European Sky Air Traffic Management Research" (SESAR) Chief Technical Architect, Mr Peter Hotham;
  • The Fedral Aviation Administration's Mr Donald Ward - who spoke about the “Next Generation Air Transportation System” (NextGen); and;
  • The UK’s Ministry of Defence Squadron Leader Al Corner - who contributed a presentation on the “Joint Military Air Traffic Services” (JMATS) project.

Mr Tony Vaudery from the National Air Traffic Services (NATS) and Mr Neil Perry of the Civil Aviaiton Agency (CAA) also gave their perspectives on SESAR.

Hosted by SEEDA (South East England Development Agency) and supported by both The Aerospace and Defence Knowledge Transfer Network and the Farnborough Aerospace Consortium (FAC), the speakers and organisers delieverd a truly landmark event.
